Has any one book-not to mention poems dating back from Sappho–or the thousands that have since been published during a century of armed conflict, stopped any war? Or have they had the opposite effect by celebrating the triumphs of soldiers along with the cost of those triumphs?Īs if in response to these questions, the field of war literature has expanded mightily since Remarque to include graphic novels ( It Was the War of the Trenches by Jacques Tardi), books by and about women at war ( Girl at War by Sara Novic) both realistic and magical investigations into the lives of refugees ( Exit West by Mohsin Hamid Loom by Therese Soukar Chehade) stories told from the point of view of America’s enemies ( The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen) and the resurrection of Greek myths ( The Watch by Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya) to recast the narrative of the ever unfolding and potentially endless War on Terror. 5/21/2023 0 Comments About the author lois lowry![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And this was something I did not know at all. Of course, we are all told when we are in school studying writing to write about what we know. Though I was in Maine and my library was closed, I found, for example, that I could go to the British Museum and go down the wing to the 2,000-year-old artifacts and look at them closely. And there I sat at home and it was amazing the amount of research I found that I could do on the internet. This, of course, had a lot of mystery to it. Those are the people I’m interested in and I think about a lot. When I read that they identified the body as a 13-year-old girl, I thought, well, those are my people. I found a magazine article that mentioned the finding of this particular body, which was identified as an adolescent. (He survived and is well, by the way.) I was at home and I couldn't go anywhere. I was home alone and I was not allowed, of course, to visit him. It was the summer of 2020, not that the time matters, except that my husband was in the hospital with Covid. ![]() For those who have not read the book, what drew you to the subject of the Windeby Child and these remains found in a peat bog in northern Germany? ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments The paris library book![]() ![]() ![]() With Jews getting discriminated against and loved ones going to fight against Germans, Odile and her loved ones try to find stability in things they love.
